Doc Searls on Biden/Palin Debate

Last night I read Doc Searles’ post on the Biden/Palin debate and I think he’s just plain wrong. I lurve me some Doc Searles but I don’t think he’s giving most Americans, and particularly female voters, enough credit. Is there a huge percentage of shallow, uninformed, and just plain dumb Americans who would swallow folksly Palinisms hook-linie-and-sinker? Absolutely. But I don’t think those people are watching political debates on TV.

The concern before the debates was whether Biden was going to be condescending towards Palin when the result was that Palin was condescending to the viewers. The fact that in these troubled times that the Republicans are desperate enough to put a simpering, flirting, winking person on TV to parrot coached taglines instead of answering questions about the issues is a sign of desperation on the part of a failing party. Did Doc Searles see the “womens’ reaction” live action polling on CNN.com? Every time Palin spoke, her approval rating by women dropped precipitously - particularly in the 2nd half of the debate. This candidate isn’t ready for the vice presidency much less any public office beyond the mayorship of Wasilla, AK. Frankly, it’s shameful that she’s governor of Alaska - hopefully that will be challenged with her “Troopergate” and other scandals.

While I do despair, probably much like Doc, over the “middle” of the country, I’m feeling a little better about it after hearing that McCain is losing Iowa and now Ohio and several other “safe” states for him are in the mix. Even if Palin was a qualified and outstanding candidate, McCain is still the problem. But the reality is that McCain picked Palin and she’s an embarassment, which is an additional liability for McCain.
