Red Carpet Action

I’ve had a very busy week – I’m no longer at Atalasoft which is unfortunate but probably better for my health and well-being. I’ll be relaunching my marketing blog, Needlemine.com as my new consulting website – the blog will still be there, but on an interior page. I’ve had some good meetings with people so it’s easy to stay positive about this moving forward.

On Wednesday the 15th I’ll be going into Boston for the afternoon and to stay overnight with some friends – there will be some business meetings in there but I also have some video equipment to track down as B&H in NYC is close extensively for Passover and a jillion other holidays.

The purpose of my trip is multifold: articles for LAist and Bostonist, the opportunity to see some friends, and a chance to network for potential consulting leads. Thursday morning I fly to Los Angeles where I have a couple afternoon meetings followed by a taping at E!’s “The Soup” where I’ll talk to the executive producers and host Joel McHale. Friday AM I hope to do a video with comedian Bill Burr and then it’s on to Burbank to interview the creator of NESN’s Comedy All Stars along with several of the comedians who will appear in the series. Friday night and Saturday will be events at PaleyFest09 (all about TV) and then Sunday will be spent on the red carpet at the TV Land Awards. Sunday night I’ll be doing a video piece with comedian/video artist Jon LeJoi which is a bit intimidating because he’s master of the genre.

Monday morning I head back to Boston.

Speaking of folks on trips, I’ve been following the progress of a friend I made at the Boston Google Meetup, Sean Carlson, who is driving across the USA from San Francisco to New York City. He’s been posting on his Twitter account and it’s been good to see some familiar location names pop-up here and there – makes me wish I had done the drive when I had the opportunity back in 2006 or so.

I’ll try to emulate the Twitter updates on my LA trip.

Last Friday I posted my Bostonist.com interview with actor/comic/impressionist Frank Caliendo and some time Friday, Boston.com, the Boston Globe web site, picked up the video and posted it on their home page for the entire weekend and it’s still up there today. This has provided some great traffic to Bostonist and I hope to post more pieces

He was very friendly and even “turned on” his act here and there which I thought was fun/funny, but some folks don’t care for his impressions and that’s fine. This doesnt mean that Caliendo is some unfunny guy – he’s very smart and knows that there is a huge demographic of people that do find his appearances on FOX NFL Sunday and his show “Frank TV” very funny and he is now delivering an entire new season of “Frank TV” to them (starting 10/21).

USA, TBS, and TNT are doing an excellent job in delivering product to this demographic. FX, HBO, and Showtime are delivering a different product to a different set of people. The big 3 (4 including FOX), have a huge problem. They want to deliver everything to everyone and fail on almost every turn, particularly on comedy – the only shining lights being “30 Rock” and “The Office” (and sometimes “How I Met Your Mother”).

Caliendo’s live act is very different than his TV work, so if you think that what you see on TV is what you get in person, think again. Check him out if he comes to your town.
